A high-level meeting on the implementation of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Protocol on the Free Movement of Persons opened in Mogadishu on Tuesday, bringing together government officials and technical experts to advance regional integration and facilitate cross-border mobility among IGAD member states.
The three-day meeting has convened representatives from relevant institutions of the Federal Government of Somalia responsible for migration, border management, and regional cooperation. Participants are expected to discuss practical measures for implementing the protocol and strengthening collaboration among IGAD member states.
Speaking at the opening session, Director of the Africa Department at Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdulkadir Mohamud Yusuf “Burgal,” welcomed delegates and praised the convening of the high-level meeting in Mogadishu. He said the gathering reflects the commitment of IGAD member states to deepen regional cooperation and promote the free movement of people across the region.
Somalia’s Ambassador to IGAD, Mahmoud Karshe, outlined the progress made in implementing the protocol, noting that the process has been underway since 2017. He said IGAD continues to work towards establishing a visa-free system and developing mechanisms that will facilitate mobility, enhance regional integration, and support economic development across member states.
The ambassador also expressed appreciation for the Federal Government of Somalia’s efforts in advancing the implementation of the agreement and strengthening regional cooperation through IGAD initiatives.
The meeting forms part of Somalia’s broader efforts to enhance collaboration with regional and international organizations, including IGAD and the East African Community (EAC), as the country seeks to promote trade, mobility, and closer economic and diplomatic ties within the Horn of Africa and East Africa.
