South Korea’s Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back has said Seoul is considering supporting US efforts to guarantee safe transit in the Strait of Hormuz, where a South Korean vessel reported coming under attack last week.
Ahn delivered the message during a meeting with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in the US, saying Seoul would “participate as a responsible member of the international community and review ways to contribute in phases”, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.
He said such support may include providing personnel and military assets, as well as information-sharing.
US President Trump paused his “Project Freedom” to move stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz last week, but has said the US may relaunch an expanded naval mission to secure the waterway if talks with Iran do not succeed.
