The Deputy Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Abdiwahab Abdi Omar (Cananug), represented Somalia at the International Conference on Sustainable Mining and Environmental Development held in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

The high-level gathering focused on the sustainable management of mineral resources in a manner that promotes environmental protection and community development—key priorities for resource-rich African nations. The conference brought together senior officials, including the President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the King of the Asante Kingdom, ministers from various African countries, international experts, and representatives from global institutions.

In his address to the conference, Deputy Minister Omar underscored Somalia’s commitment to the fair and transparent development of its natural resources. He highlighted the government’s vision for leveraging the extractives sector to support national development while ensuring environmental sustainability and social equity.

On the sidelines of the conference, the Deputy Minister held bilateral meetings with African leaders and representatives from international organizations, where discussions focused on strengthening technical cooperation and institutional support for Somalia’s mining sector.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources views participation in such global forums as a strategic opportunity to build technical capacity, foster international partnerships, and advance the sustainable development of Somalia’s vast natural wealth.
