Statement by the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) recognizing the critical role of democratic processes in strengthening Somalia’s electoral landscape, is closely following the upcoming elections in the northern regions of Somalia (Somaliland). The successful implementation of the one-person, one-vote model in regions of the country such as Puntland, underscores the Somali people’s unwavering commitment to free and fair elections, as well as their right to elect their representatives at all levels of government.

In line with Somalia’s new electoral model as agreed by the National Consultative Council (NCC), on the 8th of August 2024, the Federal Cabinet approved and submitted three draft laws advancing democratic governance. These laws are the Law Establishing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the Law of Political Parties, and the Law of Elections.

In line with these efforts the Speakers of the Federal Parliament of Somalia have constituted a

15-member committee entrusted with the in-depth review of these pivotal legislative bills, thereby empowering the Parliament to uphold and execute its constitutional responsibilities.

These initiatives are crucial to achieving the one-person, one-vote system across district, state, and national levels, marking a significant step forward for Somalia’s democratic processes.

The Federal Government of Somalia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to a transparent, inclusive, and credible electoral process, one that authentically reflects the will of the Somali people. We call on the international community to support these developments within the framework of Somalia’s federal system and to honor Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, in accordance with international law.
