The French government will officially recognize the Palestinian state next September, President Emmanuel Macron said, making it the first G7 country to do so.
In a statement posted on X, Macron said the formal announcement would be made at the UN General Assembly in New York.
“The urgent need today is to end the war in Gaza and save civilians. Peace is possible. We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza,” he wrote.
Palestinian officials welcomed Macron’s decision, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the move “rewards the terror” following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.
