State Minister of Defense and SNA Commander Welcome Turkish Naval Flotilla to Mogadishu.

The State Minister of Defense of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Omar Abdi Ali, alongside the Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud, led a high-level delegation on Wednesday to welcome a deployment of Turkish Navy warships to the port of Mogadishu. The arrival of the vessels marks a continued deepening of the defense cooperation between Somalia and Turkey, specifically regarding maritime security.

The docking of the Turkish naval assets comes at a critical juncture as the Federal Government of Somalia accelerates its strategic plan to rebuild and professionalize the Somali Navy and Coast Guard. This initiative is designed to secure the nation’s vast coastline and protect its territorial waters from illegal activities. The presence of the Turkish fleet is seen as a practical step in the ongoing efforts to enhance the operational capacity of the Somali naval forces through joint training and logistical support.

The welcoming ceremony at the port was attended by a robust lineup of senior officials, reflecting the importance of the event. In addition to the Defense leadership, the delegation included the State Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, the General Assistant of the SNA, and the Commander of the Somali Navy and Coast Guard. They were joined by the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia and other high-ranking military officers from both nations.

During the reception, officials highlighted that the arrival of these warships serves as a strong indicator of the enduring partnership between Mogadishu and Ankara. Turkey has remained a steadfast ally in the reconstruction of the Somali security sector, and this latest naval engagement aims to further consolidate the capabilities of the Somali National Army in defending the country’s sovereignty at sea.
